07.3 Revelation – 7×7+1

God’s People Fully Filled

The Jews in Acts were gathered in the city for the Festival of Weeks.  This holy day commemorated two things: the harvesting of the first fruits of the season and the day the law was given to the people at Mt Sinai.

How fitting that this is the day that God chose to send the Holy Spirit to dwell within the believers and to convict and call the first new believers into the church.

How fitting as well that the number 50 is the sum product of 7×7+1.  7 is the number of completion, dating back to the creation story.  49 days is 7 weeks of 7 days.  50 is the plus 1.

Emmanuel is God with us.  Seven sevens is Christ living, dying and fulfilling the law and the prophecies, paying the price in full for the redemption of our sinful souls.  +1 is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  God in us.  Working in God’s saved people to transform us into holiness for everlasting life with Him.

My Answers:

6.
Convicted of their own sin.  They could not fix it – couldn’t make it right.  It is devastating to see how broken things are and be powerless to fix them.

7.
Repent, be baptized, receive the gift of the H/S, save yourself from this corrupt generation
Those who accepted were baptized and 3000 were saved

07.2 Revelation – God’s Will

God’s Will

In Acts 2:1-21 we receive insight into God’s will.  The apostles were gathered in the city in the upper room in obedience to God’s will, expressed to them by the directions given by Jesus at his ascension.  The Jews were in the city in obedience to the law and the calendar for the Festival of Weeks.

In the writings from Joel, as recited by Peter starting in vs 17, we further see God’s will through His “I will” statements:

  1. I will pour out my Spirit on all people
  2. You sons and daughters will prophesy
  3. Your young men will see visions
  4. Your old men will dream dreams
  5. I will pour out my Spirit in those days and they will prophesy
  6. I will show wonders
  7. The sun will be turned to darkness
  8. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved

Notice that these are not probability statements they are assurances.  These things will happen.  There is no risk or doubt.  God promises and delivers.

These will statements are all promised, secured and fulfilled by God.  Our only work is to “call on the name of the Lord.”  It is not by works or measure.  It is not us, it is the Holy Spirit in us that gives us the words to call out and to be saved.

My Answers:

3.
2 groups of people – the ones waiting in the upper room and the 3000.  Those in the upper room believed in all they had seen, now received the H/S to dwell within them.  They plus the others in the city were Jews.  All were sinners.  All were convicted of sin and called to repent and receive the gift – 3000 did and received the living water that Jesus promised

4.
The Holy Spirit from inside of me speaks words (particularly to the kids) that I don’t know that I have – He has given me words and a voice that is not my own.  This voice of the H/S is true and real today in believers and will be magnified even greater in the end days during the time of wrath.

5.
The kids.  My co-workers.  Through the testimony not only of my words but of my actions.  That they may see the spirit at work in me (not me but the spirit) and see what is missing from their lives.  We all feel empty without the H/S, it is the only one who truly fulfills.

06.5 Revelation – Rebuked and Disciplined in Love

Rebuked and Disciplined in Love

In Revelation 3:19, Jesus tells the church in Laodicea, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.

I think we need to really understand what this is saying.  We use these words today as a synonym to punish.  When we think of rebuke, we think of scolding someone, berating, finger-wagging, criticizing.  When we think of discipline, we think of punishment, spanking, time-outs, being grounded, yelling.

But how does that fit with “those whom I love”?

It also brings up the question in our minds, when we are going through hard times, is it God’s punishment for something that we are doing wrong?  This thinking isn’t anything new, Job faced it when he was tested, the priests professed it for those who were physically diseased.  Even some religions profess that difficult situations, pain and affliction are “karma” for bad things.  You earn the punishment.

Again, that doesn’t fit with “those whom I love”.

However, if you dig deeper and look into the origins of the words rebuke and discipline, it paints a bigger picture with a deeper meaning.

The word rebuke has origins in in the Old French language.  It means to force back or repress.  It is similar to repent.  Repent is to turn back away from the wrong path.  Rebuke is to intervene in the life or actions of another to direct or prompt them to change their path.  It word be God’s personal engagement in your life prompting you into an act of repenting and changing path from the direction you are going.

But the word is actually even deeper in meaning than that.  The “buke” in the origin of the word is the same word that became busche or buche in French, meaning log.  Even non-French speakers may have heard of the Christmas treat known as a buche de noel (yule log cake).  So, in the original word, a rebuker would be someone who, literally, would cut out logs as in removing the dead and diseased word from a tree.

A gardner or arborist who “rebukes” a tree is not punishing the tree by forcing it back into a healthy path and trimming off the dead and diseased word.  I’m not saying that I think the tree would look forward to it or enjoy it, but it is being done in love and for the good of the plant.

In the same way, I think we misinterpret the word discipline.  Again, to most of us, to face discipline means to face punishment.  However, we also use the term as a compliment at other times, commending an individual or group for being disciplined to accomplish their goals and objectives.  We want our police, fire, soldiers, scientists, engineers, etc. to be disciplined in what they do.

The primary definition of the word discipline is not punishment but training.  It is “to train someone to follow and obey rules or a code of behavior” according to the dictionary.  Interestingly, the origin of discipline is the same as the origin of disciple.  To be a disciple means to undergo training and to submit in obedience to God.

I think with this further light we gain a much deeper understanding of this verse.  Because God loves us He is willing to actively be engaged in our lives.  He is willing to not only stand in our way when we have gotten our lives on the wrong path, but to intervene and cause us to turn back.  He is willing to step in and trim away the dead and diseased wood we have allowed to grow.  And after turning us around, He doesn’t leave us to wander aimlessly, but He trains us in His path, in His word, and toward His light.

In response, we are called on to “be earnest and repent.”  Even in repenting, we are not called upon to use our own strength and will power.  God is calling those He loves “to be sincere in their conviction” (earnest) toward Him and yield to His desire to turn their lives around and back toward Him (repent).

As a loving parent, God’s primary desire is to help His children grow and accomplish amazing things.  He wants His children to be on the right path and He is willing to do all the hard work to lead and teach and walk along side and even carry them along the way.

That is love!

06.4 Revelation – Trading Beads and Doing Pretty Good

Trading Beads and Doing Pretty Good

According to Wikipedia, from the 16th to the 20th century (yes, last century) glass beads were used as a currency.  Wealthy individuals who those with storehouses filled with glass beads.

To most of us, we recognize that glass is made from sand and understand that there is no shortage of sand.  We find it ridiculous that people worked, fought, stole, and exerted power over each other for a bunch of glass beads.  Other than for their historical value, you would be hard pressed to pay for anything today with a handful of glass beads.

And, yet, today we find ourselves in the same situation over pieces of paper, plastic and less, numbers stored electronically on magnetic disks.  If we have lots of these pieces of paper, or lots of numbers in the electronic storage, we believe we are rich.

But, in the same way that the accumulation of beads is without value today, the things we consider wealth do no transfer into the new economy of heaven.

I read a story once (I can’t find the source, but if anyone knows, please comment).  It described two men who temporarily left their homes to go work in a foreign country.  They both rented apartments.  They both took care of their basic needs of food and clothing and entertainment with the money they earned.  One man, however, spent lavishly on remodeling of the apartment he was renting.  New carpets, knocked out walls, put in new windows, drapes, paint, etc.  The second man lived modestly, but comfortably, and sent as much money as he could back home.  At the end of their engagement, both men left the foreign land and returned back home.

The moral of the story is that this life on this earth is not our home.  This is a temporary apartment.  We have a permanent home in heaven.  What fools we are to have the proceeds of our work go to anything on this side, instead of having the entire focus of our work go to investments which can be sent ahead back to our real home.

But we don’t think.  We, like the Laodiceans, focus on our own comfort and we start to believe that we are self-sufficient and can take care of ourselves.  The convicting arrow God sent to my heart on this was when I was asked for a prayer request for myself that my leader could pray for me.  My initial response was, I’m doing pretty good and don’t really need anything right now to pray for.  And then the arrogance of that luke-warm answer pierced me.  Is God’s calling for me to “do pretty good’?  Is my view of God someone that I turn to in prayer after I fail on my own, instead of with Him first and foremost?

My Answers:

10.
Words of the Amen – the one with the ability to “make it be”

11.
They were lukewarm

12.
a.
They said they were rich, wealthy, not in need = they were wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, naked

b.
They confused earthly possessions with eternal possessions.  It doesn’t transfer, but heavenly riches can be accumulated in heaven now (the earth is just rental property)

c.
When they lack compassion.  When they start to believe they have “earned it” and/or “deserve it”.  When God is not first and last in their day and their lives

06.3 Revelation – Wearing White

Wearing White

Last week and this week, in the letters to the churches in Revelation 3, Jesus mentions a promise of his followers being clothed in white.  In my mind I have always pictured that as a white robe like the vestments of priests or robes of acolytes or choir robes.  However, this past week I ran across an image that gave me a new perspective.

In yesterday’s lesson I discussed the commendation that the church of Philadelphia received for standing firm and defending their faith.  This, and the discussion of the Armor of God, brought a military connotation to my mind in reading these verses.  Then, I saw a picture of a US Navy Officer wearing their dress white uniform.

In that light, reading the promises in Revelation 3:11-13 brought new imagery to mind:

To be made a pillar in the temple of God reminded me of the soldiers who stand guard at our most important and distinguished monuments.  It is an area of peace and one where they have immediate proximity to things and people that are valuable and dear.  It is an honor to be selected to serve in such a capacity.

To have new names written on us: The Name of God, The Name of the City of God, A new name, reminded me of the insignia of the branch, unit, company or troop on the uniform of an officer.  It reminded me of the flag on the arm designating the country and capital city to which the officer has pledged allegiance.  It reminded me of the rank and title and name by which the Captain or Colonel had been given and by which he or she is known.

My Answers:

7.

Write the name of God – family name, adoption
New name of City of God – heavenly city name, no longer dwell on the earth but have a home town in heaven

9.
He is the holy and true ruler of all, providing access to the Father and to Heaven with a door that cannot be shut.  He is the judge and He knows (no need to hide)  He is not calling us to fight, but only to not deny His name – He will do the rest.  He passes out crowns in heavens.  He has the authority to adopt us into His Father’s family

06.2 Revelation – Standing the Higher Ground

Standing the Higher Ground

The church in Philadelphia is commended for having kept the word of Jesus and having not denied His name.  They had kept his command to endure patiently.

Our lesson for today discussed taking a stand for truth in a culture hostile to our Lord.  Clearly something in line with what was taking place in Philadelphia.

In the book Sit, Walk, Stand, Watchman Nee points out that the action of standing is a defensive posture, not an offensive posture.  We are called to Stand with Jesus, not to rush out and attack wickedness, but because of the attacks of wickedness.

Jesus is Holy.  Jesus is True.  Jesus hold the keys or rulership both to the church on earth and to everlasting life in heaven.  Everything belongs to Him already.  Especially the good and noble, the pure and unstained, the sacred things.

Even if we look to the description of the Armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-18, everything in the list can be used for defense, even the sword of the Spirit which can block the blow of another sword  or club.

Last year, in the study of Moses, we saw time and again how Moses and Aaron, when under attack, would immediately assume their battle positions.  That position wasn’t, however, what we would normally think of.  Their first battle ready position was to get on the knees or fall face down in prayer to the Lord.  They understood, the principle that would ask, why use a slingshot (our own power) when you have access to cannons and high power weapons (God’s power)?  Why stand behind a paper wall, when you can stand in the shelter of God’s fortress?

Jesus is not commending the church for crusades and battles, He is commending them for continuing to stand with Him even in the face of great persecution, even when they have little strength.  In such action, they are promised to be spared from the larger onslaught attack that is to come to test the inhabitants of the whole world.

My Answers:

b.
The key to eternal life.  The key that unlocks our heart so that the Holy Spirit may abide in us.  The key to love and redemption

5.
Those who refuse to obey Jesus – regardless of heritage

6.
a.
He desires joining, raising up, holiness, power, grace, repentence, obedience, joy / they seek to impart the opposite

b.
By choosing that path and then relying on His spirit, His words and His power.  Through actions and witnessing

05.5 Revelation – Fraying at the Edges

Fraying at the Edges

Job stands out in the bible because his temptation came in a single tsunami event.  He lost thing after thing after thing of importance in a single day.

But, for most of us, temptation works differently.  Instead of ripping everything away at one time, temptation consists more of a snipping of threads.  A little lie over here.  A putting off of time with God today because I’m too tired.  A harsh word because I’m angry.  A complaint, a drink, a gossiping statement.  A little greed.  A little envy.  A bit of conceit.  Nothing big.  Nothing “everyone else isn’t doing.”  Just little snips of very fine thread.  But before long, the garment of our faith is unraveling.

This was probably the case with the church in Sardis.  The fabric of their faith was of good quality.  They had a reputation (past history) for being alive.  But, they were dead.  The clothing of their faith was soiled, frayed, falling apart at the seams.

I love the way this is addressed in Romans 13:12-14, “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”

But, here is the critical fact.  We do not have the strength to stay awake on our own. We do not have the ability with our own willpower to resist every temptation and every sin.  Just as the apostles, Peter, James and John (yes, this very same John), had found it impossible to stay awake on the night that Jesus prayed in the garden, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

But Jesus gives us the solution to that weakness in His introduction to this letter to the church.  “These are the words of Him who holds the seven spirits (that is the seven-fold spirit) of God and the seven stars.”  We cannot succeed relying on the flesh.  But we can succeed by relying on the strength of the Spirit.  We cannot succeed by our own will power, but we will succeed by the will and the power of Jesus.

When we cloth ourselves not in darkness but in light;  When we put on the armor of light;  When Jesus Christ is not only an acquaintance, but the very uniform by which we identify who we are and to whom we belong;  Then, the snipping thread of day-to-day temptation will have little impact.  When we repent our sins, He mends our faith with stronger, holy thread spun from the righteous acts done in His name by God’s holy people.

Adam and Eve were given clothes of the sacrifice of animals to cover their sin.  Through Jesus, those garments of death have been replaced by robes of light and righteousness and holiness.

The night is nearly over, the day is almost here.  What will you be wearing?

My Answers:

11.
a.
their deeds, that they had a reputation for being alive but were dead – Wake up! Strengthen what remains, Remember what you have received and heard, hold fast, repent

b.
It makes me question where I have fallen asleep in my faith.  Where have I slid and become complacent, starving the spirit in me?

12.
clothes were placed on adam and eve as a covering from their sin, requiring sacrifice.  The white clothes of purity, bright and clean, are the clothing of Christ and the righteous acts done in His name by God’s holy people.

05.4 Revelation – Holdfast

Holdfast

In a similar way that land-based plants have roots, many aquatic plants have a holdfast.  The purpose is to hold on to the solid substrate.

In verse 25, Jesus commands the church at Thyatira to holdfast to what they already have.  What they have is the foundation of their faith.  It is the Word of God.  The good news of the gospel.  It is the connection directly to the rock (Jesus).

As the waves of the times pull us this way or that, the hope is in the holdfast because it is what connects us to Jesus.

The way to keep the holdfast strong is to keep the plant strong and alive.  The best way of doing that is through daily feeding, care and exercise.  These are the things the church was commended for doing.  Love.  Faith.  Service.  Perseverance.  Doing/Deeds. Obedience.  Witnessing.  Spreading the gospel.

I saw a kids teaching game along these lines.  It is called the “deeds vs words” game.  The kids are supposed to “Do what I say not what I do” (kind of like simon says, but with a twist).  For example, sometimes I would do and say the same thing (say to touch your knees and I would touch my knees), but other times my words and actions wouldn’t match (I would say touch your head, but I would instead touch my shoulder).  When about ½ the kids get out, points are rewarded to the rest and start over another round.

The point is that our actions not only keep our own “holdfast” healthy, but they, even more than our words, are our witness and what strengthens those around us.  In the same way that the tallest and biggest trees grow only together in the forest (e.g., redwood forest), the stronger the holdfast of those around us the stronger is our own.  In a community of plants, they overlap, grow together and weave into something even stronger than one plant could do on its own.  In a community of believers, they keep us in faith and love, we serve together persevere together and witness together (to each other and to others).

My Answers:

9.
Hold on to love faith service perseverance doing/deeds (truth/gospel).  Do not hold to false teaching, Satan’s “so-called deep secrets”.

Hold only on to what you have until I come (love, faith, service, perseverence, doing/deeds)

10.
obedience, faith, perseverance, service, love, to be witnesses and spread the gospel

05.3 Revelation – I Want to Do What I Want to Do

I Want to Do What I Want to Do

The letter to the Church in Thyatira starts out great.   I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.” If only it could have stopped there.  But, there was something else living in their ranks.

Nevertheless, “You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet“.

Jezebel is likely a reference to the philosophy of the wife of King Ahab at the time of Elijah.  That Jezebel personified the self-centered attitude of “I want to do what I want to do.”  It was a philosophy of life without boundaries.  It was a belief that power and authority were to be used as weapons to take what I want from whom I want.  It was a life focused on self-indulgence seeing others beliefs and boundaries as tools that could be used against them for my own personal wants and gains.  It was an attitude of “live for the moment,” where lies flourished, image was everything, and eternity was mocked (may they be damned, and may I be cursed if…).  It was an attitude of living for now regardless of consequences.

Sound familiar?

There have been Jezebels of every age.  They have been people in power and authority.  They have been neighbors.  They have found their way into our places of work, our neighborhoods, our schools and even in to our churches.  Some of us may have been a Jezebel earlier in life.

Jezebelism is not to be tolerated.  I am not simply talking about the person.  The cardinal matter here is not the person but the attitude and philosophy of which the the person is a prophetess.

The instruction to the church is to “hold on”.  Jesus knows the corrosive nature of this attitude and philosophy.  He has been at work, in the spirit, on the hearts and minds of those who hold to what they contrive to be “the secret”, but is in fact nothing but lies.  He has called them to repent, but they have refused.

The instruction to the church is that He is coming and He will take care of this.  The proper authorities are on their way – just hold on.

The instruction is the same to us.  There are boundaries.  I am not the center of existence.  Power and authority are gifts given to serve.  It is not about me, it is all about God. Hold on.

But holding on doesn’t just mean not jumping in to the temptation with our entire being.  It also means not yielding to the temptation to see how far we can stretch the boundaries.  It means not seeing how close we can put our own self interest to the center of our world before we’ve pushed God aside.  It means not yielding to greed, lust, sexual immorality, theft, murder, idolatry, lying, cheating, self-centered behavior – not even a little beyond what is honoring and holy before the Lord.

There are boundaries.  Not as oppressive limits, but as healthy and helpful constraints.  Sweet treats are good, but a diet of only sweet treats is deadly.  We understand that, but we want to listen to Satan’s so-called deep secrets, including the idea that more is always better.  It’s not – that is one of the lies – and living a life without boundaries is missing the mark.  It is called sin.

Just hold on.  Keep doing good deeds.  Keep loving.  Keep on being faithful.  Keep your focus on service and perseverance.  Keep doing more than you did at first.

My Answers:

8.
He is all knowing.  His eyes (like blazing fire) penetrate hearts and minds and know.  He will justly repay according to the deeds performed

05.2 Revelation – Individuality and Community

Individuality and Community

In the US we have a very strong sense of individuality and individual responsibility in justice.  This is also true in other parts of the modern world, but it is very pronounced in the west.  For the most part, we tend to believe that individuals have the freedom to make choices and when they make the right choices, they should enjoy the rewards of those choices.  Likewise, when they make the wrong choices, they should face the consequences of those choices.  I should not have to pay for the goods you stole.  I should not have to suffer because of your malpractice.

While there are exceptions we make for loved ones, as well as for those we consider to be “in need” because of situations outside of their control, in general we take the stance: I’m responsible for me and my actions, but I’m not responsible for you and your actions.

But, the letter to the church of Pergammum indicates that Jesus sees us both individually and communally.  The letter is to the church, not the city, so there are some boundaries in that this is to a joint body of people who participate with each other in a community representing the body of believers of Jesus Christ.  But Jesus is clearly addressing responsibility for both individuals and the group as a whole within that body.

“You have remained true to my name.  You do not renounce your faith in me.” These are commendations for the individuals and acknowledgement of their individual performance.

“There are some among you who…  Likewise, you also have those who…” These are reprimands to the community.

In our communities, in our times, our response would likely be to argue for division of accountability.  “That is them not me.”  “It is not fair to hold me responsible for what they choose to do.”  But that is, clearly, not how Jesus sees things.

The church is referred to as the body of Christ.  Another way of looking at this is to consider these reprimands of Jesus as the physician pointing out infections or cancers within that body.  You don’t leave it to the cancer or the infection to treat itself.   You don’t try to separate the parts of your body from the whole and say, you can’t hold me responsible for the infection that is in my lung.

Jesus, the physician to the church of Pergammum, prescribes the appropriate treatment in verse 16: Repent.  He warns that if they do not repent, then He will come as a surgeon with a double edge sword that penetrates.

This is hard.  This goes against so much of how we like to define responsibility.  It is messy.  It takes time and effort.  It takes patience and perseverance.  It takes a commitment to stay true to His name and to not renounce faith in Him.

It is particularly hard because He doesn’t say to remove those individuals from the community.  But He also doesn’t say it is acceptable for the infection or cancer to continue.  The infection, though, is not the individual, it is what the individuals “hold to”.  It is the holding to false beliefs.  It is the holding to false teachings.

Repenting means that the body removes the infection, not the lung.  It means taking in collectively more of the right stuff and eliminating the junk food.  It means exercising faith daily together, consistently and accurately.  It means not turning a blind eye to needs in the community.  It means not being superior to others, but also not ignoring the wrong-doings of others.

We can be handicapped because we misunderstand the words, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”  That does not mean we are to ignore the infection, it simply means that surgery should not be our first treatment.

If surgery were the first and only treatment, then there would be no body.  There is bacteria and infection on every part of our bodies.  If that were our method, every cell would be cut off from every other cell and we would no longer be a body.  Instead, the treatment Jesus prescribes is, with His power, with His Word, to get off the wrong path of living as a body and get back on the right path of living as a body.

Repent, therefore.

There are rewards in changing path.  It is called victory.  And for the victorious church: It will be accepted as God’s chosen people (the ones fed manna in the wilderness).  It will be saved from slavery to be with God (as the Jews were freed from Egypt) and in His presence every day (living in the shekhinah glory of the Lord – shekhinah mean “dwelling place”).  It will be acquitted of all wrong doing by He who is the Judge. (black stone =  guilty, white stone=innocent).  It will be given a new  heavenly name (now known by the name of the earthly city of its members, but they won’t be dwelling in that city any more so it (the church) will have a new name that only has meaning to those who know Jesus).

But we don’t reach victory alone, we reach it as a team – as a church – as the church.
